On April 21, Eastern Kentucky PRIDE honored the winners of the 2003 Envi Awards at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset, Kentucky. The Envi Awards Ceremony featured keynote speakers Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers (KY-5) and University of Kentucky President Lee Todd. The Kentucky Opry provided musical entertainment.
Elementary School Campus of the Year Award
Finalists:
Winner: Artemus Elementary School, for outstanding environmental education projects, including an outdoor classroom, wetland and paper recycling program.
Winner: Russell County Middle School, for outstanding environmental education projects, such as a nature trail, monitoring water quality at Lily Creek and an aluminum can recycling program.
Winner: Bell County High School, for its outstanding environmental education projects, particularly the aquaculture class where students combine agriculture, biology and chemistry to produce an aquatic crop.
Tony Turner Volunteer of the Year Award
Finalists:
Linda Babb, McCreary County
Angie Muncy, Leslie County
Ronnie Sizemore, Knox County
Winner: Angie Muncy, for exemplary service as the Hyden PRIDE Coordinator, such as organizing the city’s cleanup activities and starting the “Kans for Kids” recycling program to raise funds for playground equipment.
Rogers-Bickford Environmental Leadership Award
Finalists:
Appalachian Rural Cultural Heritage Education Initiative, Pike County
Winner: Judge-Executive Denny Ray Noble, for setting the standard for environmental stewardship in Perry County, particularly for his leadership in developing the county’s Solid Waste Management Board.
Kentucky PRIDE Award
Awarded posthumously in tribute to General James Bickford, PRIDE co-founder, and Tony Turner, PRIDE chairperson.
