St. Camillus Academy's “Be Excited About the Environment” Mentoring Program

PRIDE Club members in 4th-8th grades read environmental books to younger students. The mentors wore costumes and led activities that brought the books to life.

Walker Elementary's Kentucky Animal Program

At Wayne County's Walker Elementary, volunteers helped 51 kindergarten and first-grade students learn that caring for the environment is good for Kentucky's animals.

FEBRUARY 2008: Russell County Middle School PRIDE Club's "Change a Light, Change the World" pledge drive

So far, club members have collected 96 pledges to replace one traditional, incandescent light bulb in their home with an energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulb.

JANUARY 2008: Space Kidette Rescue

400 4th-graders enjoyed an unusual lesson about protecting their local watershed, thanks to the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative and Challenger Learning Center of Kentucky.

DECEMBER 2007: Russell County High School PRIDE Club's Recycling Mentors

The club members taught a hands-on recycling lesson to 150 kindergarten students, who took home flyers with helpful recycling tips and pencils made of recycled denim.

NOVEMBER 2007: Hayes Lewis Elementary School "SciPri" Club's environmental fair

The fifth and sixth-graders in the club hosted an environmental fair for the school’s primary classes with the theme, “Practicing the Three R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.”

OCTOBER 2007: Eco Adventure Environmental Camp, Russell County

The Russell County Conservation District and the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery treated 200 students to hands-on learning activities at the 2007 Outdoor Eco Adventure Environmental Camp.

SEPTEMBER 2007: Laurel County Extension Service's 4-H Environmental Camp

More than 500 students learned about the environment at the event. They enjoyed hands-on activities by instructors from many state, federal and nonprofit agencies.

JUNE 2007: St. Camillus Academy's nature trail markers

At St. Camillus Academy in Corbin, the school's nature trail now has tree identification markers, thanks to the school's PRIDE Club. The students researched the trees and then made information cards with photos and facts about the trees.

MAY 2007: Paintsville Middle School's "Adopt-An-Island"

The Paintsville Middle School PRIDE Club earned the PRIDE Environmental Education Project of the Month Award for May 2007. The club was honored for their adopt an island project on Paintsville Lake.

APRIL 2007: PRIDE honors Southside Elementary School

The Southside Elementary School PRIDE Club partnered with the Booneville Lion’s Club to to collect used eyeglasses for needy children and adults around the world. The project was open to all students at the school.

MARCH 2007: McCreary County Middle School PRIDE Club's hiking program

The McCreary County Middle School PRIDE Club takes monthly field trips to local natural attractions, such as Yahoo Falls. Students hike through the county's beautiful terrain and keep a journal of their experiences.
