Dumps, Solid Waste

Communities can address their solid waste problems with two PRIDE grant programs. The Community Grant program funds a wide variety of environmental improvement projects. The SuperGrant program targets massive illegal dumps.

PRIDE Community Grant Program

The PRIDE Community Grant program is designed to support local efforts to clean our land and water resources. The program encourages community and citizen involvement in projects in order to promote personal responsibility for the environment.

The one-year grants are worth up to $50,000. Eligible applicants are counties, cities, other public entities and nonprofit organizations. Recipients must match the grant with a contribution worth at least 10% of the grant amount.

The grants can be used for a variety of environmental improvement projects, such as disposing of trash collected during community cleanup events, removing illegal dumps, appliance buy-back programs, recycling programs, wetland construction, certain equipment purchases and other environmental restoration projects.

PRIDE SuperGrant Program

Some illegal dumps proved to be too large to clean up for $50,000. In response, PRIDE established the SuperGrant program in 2001. The SuperGrant program assists communities to clean up massive illegal dumps, which are health hazards and eyesores that detract from the region's natural beauty.

Cities, counties, other public entities and nonprofit organizations are eligible for the SuperGrant program. The one-year grants are worth up to $1 million and require no match.
