325 PRIDE volunteers cleaned at Cumberland Falls
Beulah Mountain Christian Academy In just four hours on March 27, 325 volunteers picked up 700 bags of trash and 62 tires along Hwy. 90 near Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. The volunteers enjoyed beautiful weather, bidding farewell to a long winter and kicking off the annual PRIDE Spring Cleanup campaign.

“It was great to see so many enthusiastic volunteers having fun and working together to make a big difference at one of our most treasured natural attractions,” said PRIDE’s Tammie Wilson. “I want to thank the volunteers and sponsors who made this such a successful event. I encourage everyone to get outside and clean up yards, roads and waterways during PRIDE Spring Cleanup Month in April.”

For the third year in a row, McCreary County won the “Litter Cup” for registering the most volunteers for the event. Linda Babb, the McCreary County Solid Waste Coordinator and PRIDE Coordinator, accepted the trophy.

Beulah Mountain Christian Academy was the largest volunteer group from a school. Wal-Mart Distribution Center #6097, located in London, was the community group with the most volunteers. Plaques were presented to the school and distribution center.

Wal-Mart gift cards were awarded to the youngest and oldest volunteers. They were five-year-old Emily Whitis and Sister Judith McMann.

Anthony Hurst won the prize for bringing in the most unusual piece of trash, which was an animal skull. He won a Wal-Mart gift card.

All volunteers received a free T-shirt, lunch and a chance at door prizes. Rodney Wilson won the top door prize — two tickets to a University of Kentucky football game.

The cleanup event, which lasted from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., was sponsored by Eastern Kentucky PRIDE, Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, McCreary County Fiscal Court, Whitley County Fiscal Court, US Forest Service, McCreary County Extension Service, Whitley County School System, Bank of McCreary County, Kroger U-Save and Burger King of Whitley City.

Outdoor Venture Corporation and Wal-Mart are the Gold-Level Sponsors of the region-wide Spring Cleanup. The Silver-Level Sponsor is SouthEast Telephone.

During PRIDE Spring Cleanup Month in April, volunteers will pick up roadside litter across 38 counties in southern and eastern Kentucky. Local governments and organizations are recruiting the volunteers. PRIDE will provide T-shirts and cleanup supplies for volunteers. Also, PRIDE will help local governments pay to dispose of roadside litter, remove illegal dumps and offer free trash drop-off events.

April is also Redbud Month in the region. Redbud Month was started by TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky (TOUR SEKY), the region’s tourism development organization, in 2004 to extend the region’s annual tourism season. Information is available by sending an e-mail to Maggie Bill.

To volunteer for a Spring Cleanup event near you, or to schedule your own Spring Cleanup event, please call your local PRIDE Coordinator or the PRIDE office, toll free, at 888.577.4339, or click on your county on the map at www.kypride.org.
