The goal of Saving Appalachian Resources, Inc., or SAR, is to educate all Eastern Kentuckians to make wiser choices with our natural resources. The program reaches 250,000 students and works with 2,350 teachers.
SAR is coordinated by staff and a board of directors from the region. SAR was established in Letcher County in 1989 to address solid waste and environmental issues within the county. The program expanded to include Pike, Letcher, Magoffin and Morgan counties in 1996 with the assistance of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Robinson Trust and Mountain Fund. In 1997 the program expanded into another 11 counties.
PRIDE and SAR joined forces in 2001 with a shared vision of improving eastern Kentucky's environment. As of March 2005, the program was active in 18 counties.
SAR Liaisons
SAR liaisons are available to help teachers bring more environmental education into their classrooms and to get the students engaged in hands-on learning activities. The liaisons teach lessons on everything from solid waste issues to water quality to wetlands to recycled artwork. Their programs correlate with the Core Curriculum.
The liaisons go into the schools on a rotating basis. Most liaisons visit with pre-kindergarten through 6th grades.
To contact your liaison, call the SAR office at 888.727.3742.
