Low-income homeowners who need a septic system or sewer connection may qualify for a PRIDE Homeowner Septic System Grant. The grant pays 100 percent of the cost for low-income homeowners to connect to a sewer line, if available, or to install a septic system that has been approved by the local health department.

Eligibility Requirements
PRIDE grants are for low-income homeowners in established homes. The grant application asks for:
1. Proof of income. Income must be below 55% of the poverty level, which is defined annually by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development.
2. Copy of the deed to the property. This shows that the applicant owns the property and has the legal right to improve the property.
3. Copy of the electric bill. This proves the home is already established.

About the Grant Program
The goal of the PRIDE Homeowner Septic System Grant program is to give low-income homeowners the opportunity to replace their straight pipes, outhouses or failing septic systems with sanitary wastewater treatment systems, which are required by state and federal laws. The program is based on PRIDE’s founding principle that each resident of southern and eastern Kentucky is personally responsible for the environment. PRIDE helps people who want to act responsibly but cannot afford to do so.

As of August 31, 2005, PRIDE has invested $20,180,935 in 6,493 septic systems across the region. About half of those funds were awarded through the grant program, and the remainder was awarded through a low-interest loan program that operated from 1999 to August 2002.
